Istrian viticulture history
Ever since the ancient times people arriving from the mainland or from the sea and inhabiting Istria have been making wine. This is why the peninsula profited from the different cultures developing in the area and improving its viticulture: from Rome, Byzantium, Venice and Austria. Viticulture was developing in the only way possible at the time – by trial and error. Today, however, the modern technology, scientific discoveries and long tradition have allowed our Istrian vineyards to reach their peak, with our wines receiving international awards and recognitions worldwide.
Wherever the vineyards are, whatever the microclimate of a particular vineyard is, the whole Istria is located in the warm, yet moderate climate with over 2400 sunny hours per year. Unlike Venice in the North Adriatic, Istria is safe from extreme temperatures influencing wine production. Spring showers bathe the buds, fresh breeze airs the ground, while long summers allow our winemakers to pick each grape variety at the ideal moment of its ripeness and balance.
Istrian vineyards have been blessed twice: with variety of soil and positioning suiting different varieties, both autochthonous and international; with perfect climate conditions where Alpine and Mediterranean climates meet. Red soil lies closer to the sea, while hills leading towards the inland feature white soil rich in calcium minerals. Ancient autochthonous varieties, such as Teran and Malvazija, grow next to the internationally recognized Merlot or Pinot Grigio. The long viticulture tradition allowed the numerous generations of winemakers to detect the perfect spot for particular variety and particular wine style.
On its 600 hectares of vineyards Agrolaguna grows domestic varieties of Malvazija, Teran and Borgonja, as well as internationally famous Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Muscat Blanc and Rose.
Our Vina Laguna team of enologists is a group of young and talented individuals oriented towards a common goal: continuous increase of wine quality, retaining the modern Istria spirit at the same time – the lightness of being in Istria. Engaged in the creation of Laguna wines, they are simultaneously making history through our wines long tradition connected to modern approach, meticulously laid out and nurtured vineyards connected with market-oriented philosophy are all aimed at attracting wine lovers.
Here is what they said about Vina Laguna…
Svibanj, 2013, Poreč
“The thing about these wines is that they simply make you want to drink more,” said Clarke and, although this sounded like a joke, he added that in his rich experience as wine taster and evaluator he had often come across wines which deserved the highest ratings but lacked that special kind of appeal; they didn’t make the taster want to drink more. Furthermore, he considers the fact that every wine from Agrolaguna production line originates from one specific vineyard and that all Agrolaguna vineyards are found within the radius of fifty kilometers very positive and stimulating, „a motivation for new ambitious steps”.
Listopad 2013, Poreč
“The quality of today’s Vina Laguna has increased, the wines are light, elegant and they definitely reflect the characteristics of Istria and present that which Istria has to offer with its various positions and soils. When tasting Vina Laguna wines, the phrase “Taste the place” totally rings true. Vina Laguna Malvasias are definitely a strong point, especially because they have maintained their character in all their varieties which is the way to go in the development of a specific variety for the world market. Red varieties have also progressed and I especially liked the Vina Laguna Festigia Merlot, 2010 harvest, which is crisp, scented and full of dark berries. However, I also liked the red coupages such as the Vina Laguna Terra Rossa, 2012 harvest and the Vina Laguna Festigia Castello, 2011 harvest which represent excellent indigenous blends and also show the path that Vina Laguna should take, especially in terms of an international market”
